No. 874 Plump magic wand
12 1/4 inch lathe turned and hand carved walnut wood magic wand with gold leaf ring detail.
This wand is one of a collection that I did in October for the online prompt series, Inktober. The group inktober presents artists with a list of 31 halloween themed prompt words, and the artists are to do an individual drawing for each word on each day. I decided to take it one step further and create a unique wand for each days word. I called it Wandtober. The task was quite a gauntlet, harder than I thought it would be. But I am very happy with the results.
The wand I present you with here is Wandtober #19 Plump. This one is fairly literal, I carved a wand to look “plump”, as if its outgrown the gold ring that’s rung around its mid section. the illusion is created by carving strain marks into the area around the gold band.
Walnut is a fascinating wood, it’s both feminine and masculine, it elementally leans towards Earth but can also be of the air, and water. It doesn’t really favor any particular type of magic as strongly as other woods, but is instead a kind of Jack-of-all-trades, Swiss army wood that can do most things well enough. although its does show talent in Dispelling, protection, and Cleansing. It is a patient and loyal wood.
